🔮 Cartomancy Part Three: Interpreting Spreads & Combining Cards

on

So far in this series, we’ve walked through the Appalachian roots of Cartomancy, exploring the cultural significance and historical context that has shaped this fascinating practice. We have also delved into how numbered cards carry deep symbolic meaning, revealing layers of interpretation that go beyond their numerical values, and tried a few simple, intuitive spreads using a plain ol’ deck of playing cards, which showcase the versatility of this tool. Now it’s time to dive into how to interpret cards together, understanding the nuances of card interactions and the story they can weave when placed in combination with one another. Moreover, we will explore how to read combinations, considering factors like position and proximity that can alter their meanings dramatically, and (if you feel called) work with reversals, examining how the inversion of a card can introduce new perspectives and complexity to your readings, enriching your overall experience and understanding of the cards.

This is where your readings really come alive—when the cards start “talking” to each other and telling a bigger story. Each card, in its unique position, brings forth not only its individual meaning but also interacts with the other cards, weaving a complex tapestry of insights. The interplay among the symbols, colors, and numbers can uncover deeper connections and themes that may not be initially apparent. As these cards share their narratives, you find that the message they convey can resonate on multiple levels, illuminating your journey and guiding you toward a profound understanding of your situation.

🧩 How Cards Influence Each Other

Cards don’t speak in isolation—they speak in relationships.

When laid in a spread, each card takes on a new layer of meaning depending on the cards next to it, the positions in the spread, and your question or energy. Here’s how to begin looking at the dance between them:

➤ Repetition of Numbers

  • Seeing multiple Fours? There may be a call for stability—or a warning against stagnation.
  • Multiple Nines? A phase is closing. Something is ready to be released.

➤ Repetition of Suits

  • 3+ Hearts? Emotions, family, or love are at the center of the issue.
  • 3+ Spades? Challenges, mental stress, or a period of transformation.
  • If one suit is missing, pay attention to what’s not showing up. That absence speaks, too.

➤ Progressive Patterns

  • 5, 6, and 7 of Diamonds may show financial trouble giving way to clarity and growth.
  • 2 of Clubs followed by a 9 of Spades might indicate a decision that leads to emotional exhaustion or loss—warning you to choose wisely.

➤ Contrasting Energies

  • A joyful Ace of Hearts sitting next to a heavy Ten of Spades could signal emotional beginnings that come with a cost or challenge.
  • Queen of Diamonds near a Jack of Clubs may show a nurturing figure guiding someone younger through a task or problem.

Think of the spread like a conversation—each card’s voice adds to the overall story being told.

🔁 Reading Reversals (Optional)

Traditionally, playing cards don’t have reversal images like Tarot does—but that doesn’t mean you can’t use reversals if your intuition leads you there. Here’s how you might interpret a card that shows up upside down:

  • Blocked energy – The quality of the card is delayed, stuck, or misaligned.
  • Opposite meaning – A reversed 9 of Hearts (emotional fulfillment) could show emotional emptiness or unfulfilled desire.
  • Internal focus – The energy is happening inside you rather than in the outer world.

That said—not everyone reads reversals in Cartomancy, especially in Appalachian traditions where simplicity and clarity were favored. If it feels too complicated or doesn’t serve your style, leave them out. You do not need reversals to have a rich reading.

🧠 Intuition Meets Structure

The strongest readings come from a blend of knowledge and knowing—what you’ve learned, encompassing both the facts and theories acquired through study and experience, plus what you feel, which includes your intuition and personal insights derived from lived experiences. By integrating these two components, you create a richer understanding that transcends mere information, allowing for a more profound interpretation of the material at hand. This holistic approach enhances not only comprehension but also the ability to connect ideas across various domains, fostering innovation and deeper emotional resonance in your readings.

Here’s how to strengthen both:

💡 Trust the First Thing You See or Hear

When you flip a card and something immediately pops into your mind—a person, phrase, feeling—write it down. That’s your intuition speaking before your logic gets involved.

🔍 Don’t Overthink It

If you’ve pulled the 5 of Clubs and it feels like an argument at work, go with it. Even if the “guidebook” says something slightly different, your experience matters more.

🔥 Use the Environment

If a card falls out while shuffling, or lands face-up, or flips dramatically—that’s a message. Appalachian folk knew that spirit used everything: wind, flame, candle flickers, and yes—fallen cards.

🔮 Putting It Together: A Sample Reading

Let’s say someone asks, “What energy surrounds my relationship right now?”
You pull:

  1. 4 of Hearts – Stability in love, but possibly boredom
  2. 7 of Spades – Internal conflict or secrecy
  3. King of Clubs – A charismatic, dominant masculine energy

Interpretation:
There may be a strong foundation in the relationship, but someone is hiding something or struggling mentally. The King of Clubs could represent the partner or an outside influence (father, friend, advisor) affecting things. There’s a need to get honest and reconnect emotionally.

🌿 A Living Language

Cartomancy isn’t meant to be stiff, memorized, or robotic. It’s a living, breathing language between you, your spirit, and the cards. The more you read, the more fluently you’ll speak that language.

Some days, a 6 of Diamonds might mean financial progress. Another day, it might represent a gift, or even a cost—because the energy you bring, the question you ask, and the context of the spread all shift what that card wants to say.

The magic lives in how you listen.

🗝️ Coming Next: Making a Personal Connection with Your Deck

In the next post, we’ll explore how to bond with your deck, cleanse and charge it, and even bless or dedicate it for spiritual work—Appalachian-style.

Until then, trust your gut, shuffle with intention, and remember: these cards don’t just tell your future… they help you understand your present.

Much love and many blessings,
Mrs. B
