✴️ Runes for the Week: ᚦ Thurisaz
A Deeper Look into the Sacred Thorn
Welcome to Runes for the Week, a new soul-guided series from the Unconventional Momma Grimoire. Every Saturday, I’ll draw a rune to set the tone for the week ahead — like pulling a tarot card, but straight from the raw bones of the Norse mysteries.
These runes won’t just predict. They will nudge your intuition, awaken ancestral wisdom, and call your soul to move with intention. This week, we begin with a powerful force:
ᚦ Thurisaz — The Thorn & The Giant
Element: Fire
Polarity: Protective, destructive
Associated Deities: Thor, Loki (by proximity), and the Jötnar
Astrological Resonance: Mars and Pluto energy
Themes: Primal force, disruption, sacred conflict, protection, awakening
AKA: Thurs, Thorn, Thor
Pronunciation: ‘Thoo-ree-sas’
Letter: TH

The primary connotations of Thurisaz are protection and resistance from danger and unwanted circumstances. The visual shape of this rune has been described as both a Thorn and a Hammer, hence why it is known as the ‘thorn rune’ and also the rune of Thor. It was common for the ancient Germanic people to wear a small Mjölnir pendant around their neck to invoke the protective power of the Thunder God, the protector of Midgard.
This rune can be considered as a friendly but stern warning for the wearer to be alert for potential danger, but it also offers luck when embraced with intention. Thurisaz reminds you to be alert, prepared, and willing to defend yourself when necessary. It is a rune of empowerment, guiding you through moments when confrontation or resistance is required to secure your path.
Reversed Thurisaz
When Thurisaz appears in reverse, it indicates that, when faced with a dangerous or challenging situation, a positive outcome is unlikely if you’re unwilling to adapt. It suggests that advice or assistance may have been ignored or dismissed, leading to an outcome that could have been avoided.
Reversed Thurisaz calls you to open your heart and mind, especially to trusted advice from others. It’s a warning against stubbornness and closed-off resistance to change or guidance. Listen to the wisdom around you, even if it’s uncomfortable. In situations where you’re met with difficulty, the rune encourages you to reconsider your approach — and to trust the help being offered.
🌀 Energetic Signature
Thurisaz is the rune of the Thursar — the ancient giants who existed before even the gods. These beings embody raw, untamed, primal chaos — not evil, but powerful beyond measure. This rune also symbolizes the thorn — something small yet painful, sharp yet clarifying. Think of it as the moment you realize your comfort zone is actually a cage.
Thurisaz is the storm, the breakdown, the push through the portal.
It rarely comes to pat your back. It arrives like thunder, forcing you to confront truth, make a choice, or set a boundary that’s long overdue.
🔥 Shadow Work & Soul Growth
This week, Thurisaz invites you to ask:
- Where am I allowing passivity when boldness is needed?
- What have I ignored because it was uncomfortable?
- Who or what crosses my boundaries without consequence?
Sometimes the person we must confront… is ourselves.
Are you avoiding your inner fire out of fear you’ll burn too bright?
Have you dulled your voice to make others comfortable?
Thurisaz says: It’s time to stop leaking your power.
🛡️ Protection & Power
Thurisaz is also a rune of defense and protection magic. This is a potent week to:
- Reinforce spiritual shields
- Set firm boundaries (especially around time, energy, and truth)
- Banish what no longer serves (physical clutter, toxic ties, limiting beliefs)
- Practice spiritual discernment
You may feel on edge this week — irritated, restless, even confrontational. Rather than suppressing it, channel it. Clean your altar. Burn protective herbs. Cast a circle. Write the truth you’ve avoided.
The fire is meant to purify — not consume.
🔮 Reflection Prompt
Where am I being asked to say “no” — and what would a more empowered “yes” feel like?
- Are you saying yes to keep peace, but betraying yourself in the process?
- Are you afraid that a “no” will make you look mean, difficult, or selfish?
- What if your “no” creates sacred space for your real work to unfold?
Let Thurisaz teach you that saying “no” is not rejection — it is redirection to truth.

⚡ Final Thoughts
Thurisaz isn’t here to punish — it’s here to empower. It says: You are stronger than your fear, fiercer than your silence, and wiser than the chaos around you. You don’t have to be perfect — just present, and willing to act from the fire of your own truth.
Step boldly into the week. Let the thorn awaken you.
Much love and many blessings,
Mrs. B
