Health Update: Learning the Rhythm of a Body That Changes

on

Living in a body that refuses to behave like everyone else’s means learning to listen differently. This process is not just about physical ailments; it is a form of constant recalibration in how I perceive my own limits and abilities.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had a few more appointments and updates from doctors. The pain clinic let me know that I’ve lost a noticeable amount of strength in my left leg. It’s functioning at about 70% right now, which honestly wasn’t shocking news. That’s the same leg I injured when I was little, and old injuries have a funny way of echoing through time. Each day, I am reminded that my body carries its history, and every ache and limitation tells a story. It’s strange how physical sensations can pull you back into memories long forgotten and redefine how you interact with the present.

My primary care doctor also reviewed the heart monitor results. Overall, she said my heart itself looks good despite rare ectopy, tachycardia, and a slow electrical pulse in the lower ventricles. What concerns her more is how dramatically my heart rate jumps with postural changes like standing up or bending over. This can feel unsettling, as if my body is betraying me at unexpected moments. The fluctuation in my heart rate is not just a statistic; it reflects the dance between my body’s systems when they don’t quite cooperate. This may point toward POTS or autonomic dysregulation, so we’re heading toward a cardiology referral next. The prospect of additional tests is daunting but also necessary—each step is a piece of the puzzle toward understanding my health.

So for now, the goal isn’t perfection. It’s more about adjustment and acceptance, a reimagining of what it means to thrive within limitations.

The goal is management. A daily commitment to prioritizing self-care and understanding the signals my body sends. I’ve learned to navigate the nuances of my condition, leaning into practices that offer support rather than resistance. That might mean resting when I feel fatigue creeping in or engaging in gentle movement to maintain what strength I have left. This journey toward management empowers me to take back a sense of agency in my life.

And that’s what I’ve been focusing on. Finding strength in small victories and embracing flexibility has become integral to my approach. Every appointment, every update from doctors, every conversation about my body brings me closer to a sense of peace amidst the uncertainty. Learning to listen to what my body needs has become an essential practice, one that encourages me to honor my journey, however different it may be from others.

The Tools I’m Using to Stay Functional

Some days managing chronic illness feels like juggling glass marbles while walking a tightrope, each marble representing a different aspect of my health that requires attention and care. The delicate balance of daily routines, medication schedules, and self-care practices can easily tip me over the edge if I’m not careful. However, through trial and error, I’ve slowly built a toolkit that helps me keep my balance, including resources like journaling to track symptoms, connecting with support groups for shared experiences, and incorporating mindfulness techniques to maintain my mental well-being. These strategies not only aid in managing my condition but also empower me to face each day with resilience and hope.

Movement and Body Support

I use three mini TENS units regularly. These little electrical stimulation devices help interrupt pain signals traveling through the nerves and can provide relief for muscle spasms and nerve pain. By utilizing these units, I’ve found a significant reduction in discomfort, especially during physical activities or after an extended period of sitting.

I’ve also incorporated some complementary practices to enhance my overall pain management strategy. For instance, I engage in gentle stretching and yoga, which not only improve my flexibility but also promote relaxation in my muscles. Additionally, I pay attention to my posture throughout the day, ensuring that I maintain an ergonomic setup at my workstation. This mindfulness about my body mechanics has further contributed to minimizing the strain on my muscles.

Overall, combining the use of TENS units with these holistic approaches has proven beneficial in managing my pain and maintaining a better quality of life.

The goal is to keep my muscles engaged without triggering a flare. Gentle movement helps maintain circulation, supports joint stability, and prevents further muscle weakness. Activities like stretching, light yoga, or even short walks can make a significant difference in overall well-being. By incorporating these gentle movements into my daily routine, I can help ensure that my muscles stay active without pushing my body beyond its current limits.

For harder days, I have canes to help take pressure off my spine and leg. Using a cane not only provides physical support but also boosts my confidence as I navigate my surroundings. I’ve found that having a sturdy, comfortable cane can significantly reduce the strain on my body, making movement feel less daunting. I also have a prescription for a rollator, which offers more stability and can serve as a seat when fatigue sets in. However, finding a place locally that will fill it under insurance has been frustrating, as navigating the healthcare system can often be more challenging than living with my condition. This waiting game sometimes leads me to consider alternative solutions.

I may just purchase one myself and keep it in the car for days when dizziness or weakness makes walking difficult. This way, I have the option readily available, ensuring that I can still get out and about, albeit with the necessary support. In fact, it serves as a reminder of how important it is to prepare for uncertain days.

Sometimes independence looks like knowing when to bring reinforcements. Acknowledging that I may need assistance or additional tools is a crucial aspect of managing my health. It’s a balance between striving for autonomy and recognizing my body’s needs, which empowers me to live life with greater assurance. By being proactive and thoughtful in my approach, I not only preserve my independence but also enhance my quality of life, allowing me to engage in activities I love, whether it’s a stroll in the park or spending time with friends.

Electrolytes and Heart Regulation

One of the most surprising things I’ve learned recently is how much electrolytes help regulate my heart rate. This deepened understanding of electrolytes came about after experiencing some unusual spikes in my heart rate, particularly when transitioning from sitting to standing or making any sudden movements. I started to notice that when my heart rate spiked, drinking electrolyte water often helped settle things back down, providing a much-needed sense of relief.

This observation aligns perfectly with what I have read about POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and autonomic dysfunction, where issues with blood volume and salt balance play a crucial role. It’s fascinating how our body’s intricate systems communicate and rely on each other, and I’ve come to appreciate just how vital these minerals are in regulating not just hydration but overall cardiovascular health.

As a result of my newfound knowledge, I’ve somewhat hilariously embraced the role of the hydration goblin in social situations. You can often find me buzzing around with my stash of electrolyte packets and bottled drinks, ready to remedy any potential heart-racing incident. Whether I’m at work, out with friends, or just going about my daily routine, I ensure I’m equipped with what I need to support my body.

It’s essential to recognize that if something works for you, it’s worth sticking with it. So yes, while I might look a bit quirky carrying around my electrolytes, I can confidently say that they’ve made a significant difference in managing my heart rate and overall well-being. This small adjustment has led to a much more comfortable and active lifestyle, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Supplements and Herbal Support

Because my body is under constant autoimmune stress, I try to support it nutritionally wherever I can. This involves a meticulous approach to my diet, ensuring that I am not only getting enough vitamins and minerals but also focusing specifically on supplements that support circulation, inflammation control, connective tissue health, and nerve function. I include omega-3 fatty acids known for their anti-inflammatory properties, as well as antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress. Additionally, I pay attention to my hydration, considering water intake essential for maintaining optimal circulation and supporting the overall health of my connective tissues. I also explore various herbal supplements, such as turmeric and ginger, which have been praised for their roles in enhancing circulation and alleviating inflammation. Furthermore, I make an effort to incorporate foods rich in collagen and vitamin C, as they are crucial for connective tissue repair and function. Overall, my commitment to a comprehensive nutritional strategy aims to promote not only immediate relief but also long-term well-being in the face of my autoimmune challenges.

The Medications

Medication wise, I’m now on Taltz and Mounjaro.

Interestingly, I’m beginning to feel a little like I did when I first started Tremfya and Zepbound. That initial excitement mixed with a bit of anxiety comes flooding back as I notice subtle changes in my body. The progress this time feels slower, but it’s there, and I’m trying to remain patient while reminding myself that healing is a journey, not a race.

The inflammation is calming, which is a welcome relief. There was a time when every movement felt like an uphill battle, but now I sense a shift. My body is starting to cooperate again, responding more positively to daily activities. I find myself tackling tasks I had previously avoided, and that sense of independence is liberating.

Additionally, the weight is steadily coming down, which has a multifaceted impact on my overall health. This gradual change helps reduce stress on my spine, joints, and heart. Each pound lost feels like a small victory, reinforcing my commitment to this path. As the scales tip in a favorable direction, I also notice an improvement in my energy levels and mood. I’m embracing this new chapter with hope and determination, knowing that every small step counts in the pursuit of well-being.

The Emotional Side of Chronic Illness

Managing all of this is a full-time job some days.

There are moments when the anxiety creeps in, wrapping itself around my thoughts like a heavy blanket. If I sit in those feelings for too long, depression sometimes follows, sending me down a spiral that feels inexorable. It’s a heavy thing to live inside a body that constantly needs maintenance and care, and the weight of this reality can be overwhelming at times.

But I’m human. I experience joy, pain, curiosity, and solitude. And this reality is a lot to bear.

The difference now is that the tearful days of “why is this happening to me?” are far fewer than they were when this journey began in 2015. In those early stages, the questions felt incessant, like an echo in an empty room. I would grapple with the unfairness of it all, the unpredictability of my emotions and body. Yet, as time has passed, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of my experience.

Experience has taught me something important. I have learned that grief can indeed live here, alongside the myriad of emotions I navigate daily. It’s a complex relationship, where sorrow and acceptance coexist, and together they create a tapestry of resilience.

But so can resilience. I find strength in the moments of clarity when the fog of anxiety lifts just enough for me to breathe. Resilience has become my companion, teaching me that adaptation is possible and growth can emerge from discomfort. Each day presents an opportunity to embrace this duality, allowing both grief and resilience to coexist within me. It’s a continuous journey, one that transforms and reshapes with every experience, and I am learning to embrace it all.

The Quiet Kind of Support

Through all of this, my husband has been my anchor.

He smiles and kisses my forehead when I’m struggling. Sometimes he just pulls me close and holds me there, applying that gentle pressure that tells my nervous system it’s safe to breathe again. It’s in those quiet moments that I feel the weight of my worries start to lift, even if just a little. His presence acts as a comforting balm, soothing the chaos that often invades my thoughts during more challenging days.

Chronic illness can feel incredibly lonely, and there are times when it seems as if the world continues to spin while I’m caught in a loop of pain and fatigue. The isolation can be stifling, making it easy to lose sight of the bright moments that still exist. But I’m deeply grateful that this is not a journey I have to suffer through alone. My husband stands by my side, a steadfast companion who not only understands my struggles but also celebrates the small victories with me.

Even on the toughest days, when getting out of bed feels like climbing a mountain, knowing that I have his unwavering support provides a glimmer of hope. We have built a partnership where communication flows freely, and he encourages me to share my feelings—be they frustrations, fears, or fleeting joys. This open dialogue enriches our connection and helps me feel less isolated in my battles.

And that makes all the difference. With each shared laugh or moment of tenderness, I realize how crucial it is to have someone who not only listens but actively supports me in navigating this unpredictable terrain. Ultimately, love and companionship transform what could be a solitary journey into a shared experience, reminding me that even amidst struggles, there is light and love to be found.

Much love,
Mrs. B
