Dancing in the Grey: Embracing Both Light & Dark in Your Spiritual Practice

on

In many spiritual spaces, we’re often encouraged to “seek the light”—to be calm, centered, nurturing, and whole. And while the healing energy of the volva (seer, healer, wise woman) is deeply powerful, there’s another energy that often gets overlooked or even shunned: the raw, untamed force of the wild woman, the chaos witch, the rebel soul who burns down old patterns to birth new ones.

The truth is, you don’t have to choose between them. You are both.

We all carry the ability to be gentle, grounding healers, offering soothing energy like warm tea and soft words. But many of us also carry fire in our bellies. That chaos magic—the don’t mess with me, wild, storm-witch energy—is equally sacred. It’s not about being angry or aggressive; it’s about liberation. It’s the force that says enough, the voice that howls into the dark and carves out space where there was none before.

There is deep healing in both.

The volva teaches us to listen. To be still. To tend the wounds of others and our own with compassion, herbs, and intention.

The wild woman teaches us to scream. To release. To stop apologizing for taking up space and to make damn sure no one forgets that we are made of stardust and storm.

When you blend the two, something beautiful happens: balance. You become the grey witch, the liminal being, the one who walks between worlds and holds space for both growth and destruction, for creation and rest.

The Grey Witch is something all her own.
She isn’t tethered by the expectations of “white magic only” or “dark arts exclusively.” She knows that life is not black and white—it’s shadow and sunlight, pain and peace, justice and forgiveness. The Grey Witch works in the in-between spaces, unafraid to embrace complexity. She casts spells for healing and protection, but also for justice and truth. She honors the light, but respects the power of shadow.

She is a boundary-walker. A truth-teller. A protector and a destroyer of illusions.
She works with the natural cycles, understands the value of both birth and death, and honors the duality within herself and the world around her. Her craft is rooted in balance, autonomy, and self-awareness.

This isn’t a path of perfection—it’s a path of integration.

You can’t heal without acknowledging the source of pain. You can’t stand in your power if you’re constantly silencing your shadow. And you can’t fully embrace your light without understanding your dark.

Let’s give ourselves permission to be whole.

You are allowed to be soft and savage. Sacred and untamed. Kind and fierce. You are allowed to honor the moon anddance in the wildfire. Because when you find harmony between your inner healer and your inner chaos, you become unstoppable.

So wear the bones. Burn the herbs. Speak the blessings and the boundaries. Let yourself howl and hush in equal measure. There’s no right or wrong way to be spiritual—only your way.

Own your grey. Walk your truth. And never forget that the magic lies in the balance.

Personally, I am a blend of many paths.
I am Grey. I am Kitchen. I am Ancestral. I walk the Norse road as both a Volva & Wild Woman and I honor many of Pagan roots. I also honor the Granny Magic & Appalachian roots that are deep within my soul. I am Eclectic by design and by calling.

Being a Solitary Practitioner allows me to pull from all of these paths—guided by my ancestors, my intuition, and the Divine in all its forms. I am whole because of this weaving. I am not bound by a single tradition, and in that freedom, I have found my truth.

It is within the Grey that I find peace.
I walk with Hecate through the shadows, standing at the crossroads with torch in hand, unafraid to peer into the unknown.
But I also bask in the golden light with Jord and Sol—grounded in the Earth, warmed by the Sun, nourished by the life force that flows through all things.

This is not contradiction.
This is wholeness.
This is the sacred balance of being both storm and sanctuary, both root and flame.

To be a Grey Witch is to walk this path with intention. To honor the healing and the chaos, the silence and the roar. It is to remember that you are not too much—you are just enough. Because you are everything: the balm and the blade, the mother and the flamekeeper, the shadow and the spark.
