The Quiet Magic of a Chronically Ill Witch

There’s a version of me the outside world doesn’t see.

She is not standing tall in a candlelit circle every night, not draped in ritual regalia, not summoning storms with a flick of her wrist. No… this version of me is sitting on the edge of the bed, calculating energy like it’s currency.

How much do I have today?
Where can I spend it without going into debt tomorrow?

Living with chronic illness feels a bit like being handed a body that runs on flickering candlelight instead of electricity. Some days the flame is steady. Other days it gutters, unpredictable, demanding stillness whether you’re ready for it or not. It’s a delicate balancing act — deciding when to push forward and when to rest. Add in autoimmune disorders, dysautonomia, autism… and it becomes a full symphony of systems that don’t always play nicely together, each note representing a challenge that requires careful orchestration.

Some mornings, the initial moment of waking feels like a steep climb. The heaviness of fatigue can be overwhelming, embracing me like an unwelcome guest who refuses to leave. Each task, no matter how small, looms large—brushing my hair, making breakfast, even stepping outside. They all demand a portion of my dwindling energy, and I must choose carefully where to allocate my efforts.

Yet, within this seemingly cluttered and chaotic existence, there’s a quiet resilience. Magic still lives here. Perhaps it doesn’t roar with the power of storms or gleam like polished crystals; instead, it manifests in subtler ways. It’s in the moments when I find joy in simple pleasures — the warmth of sunlight on my skin, the taste of a favorite meal, or the laughter shared with a friend. Each of these moments can illuminate the shadows of my mind, reminding me that life, despite its challenges, still offers beauty.

In these quiet times of reflection, I cultivate my own form of power. I learn to listen to my body, to communicate with it as though it were an old friend. I find strength in adaptation—discovering rhythms that work for me and embracing the unique paths I must tread. Every small victory, every choice that honors my well-being, becomes an exercise in magic, a testament to the strength that comes from within.

So while the outside world may expect a vibrant expression of energy and strength, I know that the true magic lies in the depths of understanding, in the patience of acknowledging my limits, and in the resilience that emerges when I honor my own truth. The candle might flicker, but its light illuminates a world rich with possibility and wonder, reminding me that even in stillness, there is strength to be found.

The Mundane is Not Separate from the Magical

To an outsider, my days might look small.

Running errands can feel like climbing a mountain with invisible weight strapped to my bones. Each step into the world outside is laden with unseen burdens, a reminder of my limits as I navigate through tasks that others may take for granted. Cleaning the house becomes a ritual of pacing, resting, and negotiating with pain, every motion a dance that requires incredible focus. Even standing upright too long can feel like my body is quietly staging a rebellion, staging an insistent protest against the expectations of normalcy.

But magic doesn’t require grandeur. It never did.

It lives in the in-between spaces, the quiet corners of my existence where light filters softly, allowing me to find solace amid chaos.

It’s in the small batches…
A little oil steeping on the stove, infused with intention, pouring my heart into each drop, transforming the mundane into something sacred.
A tincture crafted not just for aches and pains but as an offering, a whisper of care to both body and spirit, a reminder that healing comes in many forms, none of which demand perfection.

It’s in the moments I can sit still and breathe, letting meditation wrap around me like a well-worn shawl, comforting and familiar. Not perfect, not long… just enough. A few minutes of stillness can create ripples of peace within, reminding me that the world doesn’t have to rush past; it’s okay to be here, in this moment, just as I am.

Because “enough” is sacred too. It is in these ordinary experiences that the fabric of my life is woven, thread by thread. A cup of herbal tea enjoyed slowly, the murmur of my thoughts finding a gentle rhythm, or a sunset that paints the sky, each hue a reflection of the myriad of emotions I carry. It is in these seemingly insignificant instances that I discover the deep well of resilience and gratitude within me.

And so, I continue to embrace the small, the simple, the sacred. For in the quiet moments, I find my true self, and that is where the real magic lies.

Nature Doesn’t Demand Perfection

Some days, my practice is nothing more than a slow walk with my dogs, and in those moments, I find clarity and peace.

The world softens out there, away from the distractions of daily life.

The fox slips through the edge of the trees like a secret, darting in and out of shadows, a reminder of the hidden wonders that nature provides.
The luna moth dancing on the night air, bringing with it a quiet understanding and beauty.
Deer move like quiet blessings through the brush, their graceful presence imbued with a sense of serenity and connection.

They are always there, whether you choose to see them or not.

Not just for me. For anyone willing to notice, nature reveals its gifts to those who pause and breathe in the beauty surrounding them.

Nature doesn’t ask for perfection or productivity; it invites you to simply be. It doesn’t care how many rituals you’ve completed this week or whether your altar looks like something from a curated feed. It simply asks… are you here? Are you listening?

And on the days when my body won’t let me do anything else, listening becomes my most powerful act of devotion. Those moments spent in observation offer insights into the rhythms of life and the true essence of existence. With each gentle step, I feel the ground beneath my feet, the air filling my lungs, and the heartbeat of the earth echoing in my soul.

In stillness, I discover a deep well of gratitude, reminding me that sometimes the simplest acts—like taking a walk with my dogs—hold the greatest significance. They connect me to something much larger than myself, a web of life that thrives in harmony, waiting patiently for us to engage with it.

The Myth of “Doing It Right”

There’s this idea floating around that spirituality has rules. That there’s a correct way to practice, a perfect rhythm to maintain, a checklist of devotion.

Let me be very clear…

That’s a story someone sold you.

You do not need wealth to be spiritual.
You do not need elaborate tools to be powerful.
You do not need perfect health to be connected.

Whether your path looks like ancestral work, kitchen witchcraft, intuitive practice, or even walking the line as a Christian witch… it is yours. It is defined by your experiences, your beliefs, and your unique way of understanding the world around you.

Messy. Evolving. Alive.

And if your practice comes in fragments instead of full rituals? If it arrives in quiet moments instead of ceremonies? If you light a candle in silence while brewing your morning tea, or you find solace in nature as you take a deep breath and feel the earth beneath your feet?

That does not make it less.

It makes it real.

Embrace the imperfections and the spontaneity of your journey. Spirituality is not a destination but rather a continual unfolding, where each moment of connection is significant. Your spiritual expression does not require validation from others or adherence to a prescribed method.

So dance, sing, meditate, or sit in stillness. Use whatever speaks to your soul. Your journey may weave through various practices, and that’s okay. It is the authenticity of your experience that holds the power. Cherish this as you navigate through the different layers of your spiritual life. Remember that the connection you seek lies within, waiting for you to acknowledge it in whatever form it takes.

Making Space in a Body That Fights You

There is grief in this life.

Grief for the energy I don’t have.
For the days lost to flares.
For the version of myself that could move freely without calculating the cost.
For the moments of laughter that were shadowed by fatigue, and for the spontaneous adventures that became distant memories.

But there is also something else…

Adaptation.
Resilience.
A kind of magic that is forged, not found.
It involves discovering strength in the moments when it seems all but lost, finding light even in the darkest corners of our lives.

I’ve learned to carve out space for myself in small, intentional ways.
That cup of tea becomes a ritual—its warmth wrapping around me like a comforting embrace, a reminder that simplicity can nurture the spirit.
A deep breath becomes grounding, anchoring me in the present, allowing me to sift through the chaos and pause, if only for a moment.
A single candle lit with purpose becomes a full circle cast in miniature, a symbol of hope and intention amidst uncertainty, illuminating the path forward.

This is what survival magic looks like.

Not loud.
Not flashy.
But steady, like the gentle heartbeat of a resilient spirit.
It whispers strength in vulnerability, teaches that beauty can bloom in unexpected places, and encourages us to embrace the everyday.
Through the pain, we blossom, creating a mosaic of experiences that inform who we are becoming, reminding us that we are more than our struggles.
In the quiet, in the routine, we reclaim power, weaving threads of intention into the fabric of our lives, crafting a narrative rich with depth and meaning.

If I Can, You Can

Here’s the truth that might ruffle a few feathers…

If someone like me, living in a body that often resists me, can still find moments for spirituality, for connection, for self, then you can too. It’s a powerful reminder that despite the challenges we face, the essence of our existence holds the potential for depth and meaning.

Life can be overwhelming—filled with obstacles that seem insurmountable. Yet, it’s crucial to recognize that the journey toward spirituality and self-discovery is not reserved for those who have it all figured out. It’s not about having a perfect life or seamless days. It’s about embracing the complexities and contradictions that make our human experience rich and profound.

Not because your life is easy. Not because your struggles aren’t valid. Each person’s journey is unique, and these individual pathways don’t diminish the weight of one’s battles. Rather, they lend the backdrop against which personal growth and connection flourish. Acknowledge your struggles; they are real, they shape you, and they can lead to moments of enlightenment.

But because magic was never meant to be reserved for the few who have endless time, energy, or resources. It exists in the smallest of moments—a sunrise that takes your breath away, a kind word from a stranger, or that instant when you lose yourself in creativity. These moments remind us that spirituality is intertwined with daily life, waiting to be discovered even amidst chaos.

It was always meant to be woven into living. Each day offers an opportunity to seek out that magic. Whether it’s through meditation, nature walks, or a simple cup of tea enjoyed in silence, these practices can serve as gateways to connect with ourselves and the world around us. Embrace the journey, imperfections included, and find solace in the connection you build with yourself, for it’s in this struggle that beauty truly emerges.

Your Path is Already Looking for You

There is no perfect way to walk this path.

There is only your way.

And the more you show up, even in the smallest, quietest ways, the more your path begins to take shape beneath your feet. Each step, no matter how subtle or seemingly insignificant, contributes to the overall map of your journey. It’s in these moments of presence that you start to recognize the unique markers that guide you forward, revealing the scenery that resides along your personal trail.

Manifestation isn’t always grand declarations and moonlit ceremonies. Sometimes it’s simply choosing, again and again, to return to yourself. This essence of return is a gentle reminder that in the hustle of life, it is crucial to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the self that exists beneath the noise. It is in this space that you cultivate clarity, allowing your true intentions to rise to the surface.

To listen. To notice. To believe that something sacred exists within your everyday life. This belief is not just a fleeting thought; it is a practice. By engaging with the world around you in a mindful way, you begin to uncover the beauty that is inherent in the mundane. The rustle of leaves, the laughter of a friend, the warmth of sunlight on your skin—these are all signs that you are woven into the fabric of existence.

Because it does.

It always has. Each day holds the potential for magic, waiting for you to open your eyes and recognize it. The universe whispers through your routines, echoing the extraordinary within the ordinary. Embrace these moments, for they are the building blocks of your reality, each one a testament to the belief that you are capable of creating a life filled with meaning and purpose. Allow your path to unfold in its own time, trusting that every experience is a teacher guiding you further down the road of your unique journey.

Much love and many blessings,
