Honoring the Earth and Jord: A Sacred Earth Day Reflection
As the wheel turns and we find ourselves standing once more in the embrace of spring, Earth Day offers us a powerful moment of reflection and reverence—a chance to honor not only the land beneath our feet but also the divine feminine force who nurtures and sustains it.
For me, Earth Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is a celebration of my sacred bond with my matron goddess, Jord—the Norse goddess of the Earth, the primal mother, and embodiment of the fertile soil, wild forests, and steady mountains. Jord is not just the ground we walk on—she is the ground. She is the pulse of the land, the whisper in the wind, the richness in the roots.
Who is Jord?
In Norse mythology, Jord (also spelled Jörð) is a giantess and the personification of the Earth itself. She is the mother of Thor, the thunder god, and a powerful yet quiet force—ancient, wise, and enduring. Jord doesn’t roar like the storm; she nourishes like the rain, supports like the trees, and transforms like the seasons.
If you’re new to her or want to go deeper, I’ve written a more detailed introduction here:

Celebrating Earth Day in Jord’s Honor
Here are a few sacred and simple ways you can honor Jord and the Earth this Earth Day:
🌿 Create a Nature Altar
Gather natural items like stones, twigs, seeds, leaves, or flowers from your yard or a forest walk. Arrange them with intention, maybe alongside a green candle or a small offering bowl of water or herbs. Let this altar be a place of gratitude and connection.
🌍 Offer Your Hands to the Soil
Whether it’s planting a tree, repotting a houseplant, or starting your garden, digging into the dirt is a literal way to touch Jord. Speak blessings or words of thanks as you work the soil.
🔥 Light a Candle, Speak a Prayer
Light a green, brown, or white candle and speak from your heart to Jord. Give thanks for the stability and sustenance she provides, and ask how you can be a better steward of her gifts.
♻️ Live in Harmony with Her Gifts
Earth Day is also a time for action. Reduce waste, use reusable items, recycle, upcycle, and support eco-conscious brands. Every small shift toward sustainability is a prayer in motion.
🌀 Connect with Community
Share your love for Jord and the Earth with others—online or in person. Host a gathering, share a post, or start a conversation. The more we speak of her, the more others remember her.
A Blessing from the Earth Mother
“May your roots sink deep into sacred soil,
your spirit rise with the growing green,
and your heart echo the eternal rhythm
of the Earth who holds you always.”
Today and every day, I walk with Jord. I feel her heartbeat in the songs of birds, in the blossoming trees, in the rhythm of my breath. And on this Earth Day, I renew my vow to live more gently, love more fiercely, and listen more deeply—to the Earth, and to her divine spirit.
How are you celebrating Earth Day this year? Do you work with Jord or another Earth goddess? I’d love to hear your story.
Much love and many blessings,
Mrs. B
